Pulmonology

Pulmonology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory system diseases – including the lungs, bronchi, trachea, and pleura.

A pulmonologist treats conditions such as asthma, COPD, pneumonia, bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, tuberculosis, pleural effusions, allergic respiratory diseases, and disorders affecting breathing and oxygen exchange.

A consultation is recommended in cases of:

• Persistent cough lasting more than 3 weeks
• Shortness of breath, chest tightness, or difficulty breathing
• Recurrent respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia)
• Wheezing or whistling sounds when breathing
• Chest pain during deep breathing
• Sleep apnea or loud snoring
• Suspected allergic respiratory disease
• Chronic symptoms in smokers or former smokers
• Breathing issues after COVID-19 or other viral infections

To ensure the most accurate assessment:

1. Previous tests and imaging – chest X-ray, CT scan, blood tests, microbiology reports.
2. A detailed description of your symptoms – onset, triggers, severity, and seasonal or activity-related patterns.
3. A list of all medications, especially inhalers or recent antibiotics.
4. Bring your inhalers if you use any.
5. Avoid smoking for at least 2–3 hours prior to lung function tests.

The consultation begins with a detailed medical history, including your symptoms, lifestyle, smoking history, and previous illnesses. This is followed by a physical examination, including:

• Lung auscultation (listening with a stethoscope)
• Assessment of breathing rate, oxygen saturation, and overall respiratory function

If needed, the pulmonologist may order:

• Chest X-ray or CT scan
• Spirometry (lung function testing)
• Pulse oximetry
• Allergy testing or blood tests
• Bronchoscopy or interventional procedures for complex cases

Based on the findings, the doctor will develop an individualized treatment plan, which may include medications, inhaler therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, lifestyle adjustments, or further testing.
