ENT Specialists
Otolaryngology (ENT) is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the ears, nose, throat, sinuses, larynx, and cervical lymph nodes.
An ENT specialist (otolaryngologist) treats conditions such as sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinitis, otitis, tonsillitis, hearing and speech disorders, as well as more complex issues like nasal obstruction, head and neck tumors, and balance disorders.
When to Consult an ENT Specialist
It is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist if you experience:
- Allergies, nasal polyps, or snoring
- Frequent nasal congestion, chronic runny nose, or difficulty breathing through the nose
- Sore throat, recurrent tonsillitis, or inflamed tonsils
- Hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or vertigo
- Sinusitis, headache, or facial pain
- Hoarseness, speech difficulties, or trouble swallowing
- Frequent ear, nose, or throat infections in children, such as otitis, enlarged tonsils, or adenoids
How to Prepare for an ENT Examination
To ensure an accurate and effective evaluation:
- If you have hearing problems, note situations where you notice the difficulty most.
- Bring previous medical records – discharge summaries, lab results, imaging studies (X-ray, CT scan of sinuses, audiometry).
- Describe your symptoms in detail – onset, frequency, and what worsens or relieves them.
- Make a list of medications or nasal/ear drops you use.
- Follow the doctor’s instructions, e.g., fasting before blood tests, if required.
What to Expect During the Examination
The visit starts with a medical interview (anamnesis), where the doctor asks about your symptoms, frequency of infections, allergies, or previous surgeries.
Then follows a physical examination, which may include:
- Otoscopy – examination of the ear canal and eardrum
- Rhinoscopy – inspection of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx
- Pharyngoscopy and laryngoscopy – examination of the throat, tonsils, and larynx
- Palpation of lymph nodes and the neck
If needed, additional tests may be prescribed – audiometry, tympanometry, allergy testing, ultrasound, or imaging studies.
At the end of the consultation, the ENT specialist discusses the diagnosis, treatment options, and preventive measures, and may recommend surgical procedures such as tonsil or polyp removal if necessary.
