An obstetrician-gynecologist focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive system, monitoring pregnancy and childbirth, as well as supporting overall reproductive health.

It is recommended to visit an OB/GYN in the following cases:

• Regular preventive check-ups – at least once a year
• Pregnancy monitoring and preparation for childbirth
• Menstrual disorders – absence of cycle, severe pain, or irregular periods
• Symptoms such as discharge, itching, or pelvic pain
• Contraception and family planning
• Menopause-related issues – hot flashes, osteoporosis, hormonal imbalance
• Suspected gynecological conditions – cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, cervical cancer, or ovarian cancer

For a more accurate evaluation, it is recommended to:

1. Bring previous test results – ultrasounds, Pap smears, hormonal tests, medical reports.
2. Note your symptoms – when they began, how they manifest, and whether they are related to the menstrual cycle.
3. Avoid using vaginal medications or douching at least 24 hours before the visit.
4. For preventive check-ups – the best time is outside of menstruation.
5. Prepare questions regarding contraception, pregnancy, or treatment.

The visit begins with a consultation and medical history – current complaints, menstrual cycle, pregnancies, and family history. This is followed by a physical and gynecological examination, which may include:

• Examination of the external and internal genital organs
• Collection of a Pap smear or microbiological sample
• Ultrasound of the pelvis and pregnancy
• Breast examination
• If necessary, additional tests may be prescribed – hormonal tests, biopsies, colposcopy. The physician then discusses the results and proposes an individualized plan for treatment, monitoring, or prevention.
