Aesthetic Clinical Hematology

What is Clinical Hematology?

Clinical Hematology is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disorders of the blood, bone marrow, and hematopoietic system.

A hematologist diagnoses and treats conditions such as anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and other benign and malignant hematological diseases.

When should you consult a hematologist?

A consultation is recommended if you are considering:

  • Anemia, low hemoglobin, or unexplained fatigue
  • Frequent bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding gums
  • Abnormally high or low platelet, white blood cell, or red blood cell counts
  • Abnormalities in a complete blood count (CBC)
  • Enlarged lymph nodes or spleen, or unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent fever, night sweats, or chronic fatigue without a clear cause
  • Suspected blood clotting disorders, thrombosis, or hematological disease
  • A previously diagnosed blood disorder requiring regular follow-up

How to prepare for the appointment?

To ensure the most accurate assessment:

  1. Bring your previous laboratory results, particularly complete blood count, iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, and coagulation tests.
  2. Bring any available hospital discharge summaries, imaging studies, biopsy reports, or bone marrow test results.
  3. Prepare a list of your current medications and supplements.
  4. Note when your symptoms started and whether there is a family history of anemia, thrombosis, or other blood disorders.
  5. Fasting is generally not required for the consultation itself unless you have been given specific instructions for laboratory testing.

What happens during the appointment?

The consultation begins with a detailed medical history, including current symptoms, previous medical conditions, medications, and family history. The hematologist will review your blood test results and assess any abnormalities in the blood count.

A physical examination may follow, including assessment of the skin and mucous membranes and examination of the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen.

If necessary, additional tests may be ordered, such as a complete blood count with differential, peripheral blood smear, iron and vitamin studies, coagulation tests, immunophenotyping, genetic testing, or bone marrow examination.

Based on the findings, the hematologist will develop an individualized treatment and follow-up plan.
