Biography
Dr. Mihail Petrov graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 2015. Since 2013, he has been part of the Neurosurgery Clinic at University Emergency Hospital “N. I. Pirogov.” As of September 2025, he joins the team of specialists at Levitas Medical Center.
His interest in surgery began during his student years. In 2011, he completed an internship in General Surgery at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey. In 2012, he trained at the Neurology Clinic of Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile. In 2014, he had a short clinical visit at the Neurosurgery Department of Klinikum rechts der Isar, TUM, Munich, Germany, where he decided to pursue neurosurgery as his specialty.
Since 2016, he has been enrolled in the Training Course of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), attending annual courses in Bulgaria, Lithuania, Scotland, and Israel. He successfully completed the 4-year program, passing the theoretical exam in 2019 in Jerusalem, Israel. In 2020, he participated in the Stroke Winter School in Bern, Switzerland. He has attended numerous training programs organized by the European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT). Over time, he developed clinical interests in neuro-oncology, endovascular treatment in vascular neurosurgery, and spine surgery.
In 2021, Dr. Petrov obtained his specialty in Neurosurgery. Since 2018, he has been actively involved in endovascular neurosurgery, and in May 2023, he was certified in Endovascular Neurosurgery. Since 2023, Dr. Petrov has been performing endovascular treatment of ischemic stroke at the developing Stroke Center at University Emergency Hospital “N. I. Pirogov.” In September 2025, he became one of the first Bulgarians to obtain the European Diploma in Ischemic Stroke Intervention (EDSI).
Dr. Petrov has numerous scientific publications in Bulgarian and international journals, including Brain & Spine, Interdisciplinary Neurosurgery, Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery, Acta Neurochirurgica, Journal of Vascular Medicine & Surgery, and Trauma Case Reports. He has also contributed as a co-author to Bulgarian and international textbooks on neurosurgery.
